Murphy Scholars
Proposals
The deadline for the class of 2028 cohort will be Friday, February 7, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. All then first-year students at Hendrix who are keenly interested in literature and language, regardless of your intended major, are eligible to apply. Our online application form will open on January 21, 2025.
The prompt for the statement-of-interest essay is:
"Use one or more of the following questions to guide you in composing a well-thought-out essay:
Tell us about your interest in some facet of literature or language--an experience that made an impact on you, or an aspect of literature or language that you have not yet experienced but would like to explore. What is it about these subjects that you are most curious to discover? What opportunities in literature or language would you like to pursue? Why do you want to be part of the Murphy Scholars Program? What would you contribute to the community of literature and language scholars?
In shaping your essay, please don't try to generalize about all of literature and language (that would be impossible and would make for a dull and generic essay!). We're interested in knowing about *you* and how *your* interests coincide with one or two particular facets of literature or language, whether that be creative writing, literary studies, drama, or foreign languages."
The length limit is 800 words.
This program provides lots of resources and support all the way through graduation. Early February of your first year at Hendrix is the only point at which you can apply to the program. So once you are a fresher, please consider this opportunity carefully. We look forward to receiving your application.
