Study-Travel Projects in Literature and Language

Hendrix-Murphy underwrites a variety of off-campus learning experiences relating to literary research, language immersion, and the craft of writing. These include both faculty-led group trips and independent experiences for students traveling solo. The latter may take the form of traditional study abroad in literature or language, or individualized projects that students design and propose themselves.

Coronavirus Advisory

Hendrix-Murphy approves and funds only those experiences that do not put students, staff, faculty, and community members in harm’s way. As of March 2020, no college travel is being approved. Anyone who submits a proposal in the April cycle needs to do so with the understanding that summer travel may not be possible, contingent on College policies and CDC recommendations at that time.

Faculty-Led Study-Travel

Hendrix faculty members often lead study-travel experiences for qualifying students. These may include participating in literary conferences, intensive writing projects, or literary research in archives or at literary heritage sites. Students, watch Hendrix Today or follow Hendrix-Murphy's news feed for updates on these opportunities and how to apply. Professors typically hold an informational session about how to apply.

Faculty members may propose study-travel projects using this form and the accompanying guidelines. Contact Foundation staff for additional information.

Independent Study-Travel

In order to garner Hendrix-Murphy support, individually designed study-travel in literature and language must have strong learning goals that fit with the Foundation's mission and are realistically attainable. Students may apply through our proposal process using the Student Cocurricular Project proposal form and following our proposal guidelines. Note that line-by-line help is also available! Deadlines are the same as Odyssey's (October 1, February 1, and April 1 of each year), and projects typically carry Odyssey credit.
