A picture of Guante, a poet

CONWAY, Ark. October 17, 2023 - Hendrix-Murphy Visiting Poet Kyle “Guante” Tran Myhre will read and discuss his work on Thursday, November 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Reves Recital Hall on the Hendrix College campus. A reception and book signing in Trieschmann Gallery will follow the reading, and WordsWorth Books of Little Rock will sell Tran Myhre’s work. This event is free and open to the public. No tickets or reservations required.

Tran Myhre is a poet and activist whose work explores the relationships between narrative, power, and resistance. He has performed in venues from the United Nations to two National Poetry Slam championships, to many colleges, universities, conferences, and festivals.

His most recent book, Not a Lot of Reasons to Sing, But Enough, is a dystopian exploration of the role that art and artists play in resisting authoritarianism. Termed as a “form-bending” exploration of “grief, community, and resistance” by MinnPost, the book weaves together visual art, theatre, and poetry into a love-letter to artistry. Not a Lot of Reasons to Sing, But Enough is available now via Button Poetry.

Tran Myhre uses his poetry and spoken word performance as methods to engender critical thinking in his audience. An educator at heart, Tran Myhre regularly facilitates social justice workshops across the country based on the themes of masculinity, consent, identity, history, and power that his poems and performance involve.

Tran Myhre’s previous work includes the book A Love Song, A Death Rattle, A Battle Cry and an extensive discography under the stage name Guante.

This event is sponsored by the Hendrix-Murphy Foundation Programs in Literature and Language, which are designed to enhance and enrich the study and teaching of literature and language at Hendrix College.
